Hey I graduated!

Graduated on Dec. 15. The grad show, I think it was a big success.
No photos or new artwork yet, since I'm at Laika in Portland, Oregon. It happened pretty quickly and I had to fly up here on yesterday but I'll be back for the holidays in a week to update with LOTS of grad show and pixar internship work.

Have a nice holiday everyone.

Tiny preview

Here's a little sneak-peek of what I'm up to for my grad show in December:

I hope to out-do myself from what I did during the summer.
Hopefully it'll be... fantastic.

Oh hey an update.

*UPDATE 9/5: Hey guys Jackson gave me a good idea, which is I should not show all of this until I graduate at the end of this term. So yeah sorry it'll be gone until then. But you get to see the color script! If you saw all the stuff from before, lucky you. Don't worry, it'll be back at the Grad Show.
Jackson lives in Richmond.

-------------------------------------- -- -- - -

Yes, it's the Pixar update. I didn't have time to put anything up while I was there, everyone was working like crazy for the 10 weeks we were there. GOOD JOB EVERYONE. And then I left my laptop in Emeryville. I'm so glad I backed everything up at home otherwise I'd be one sad ex-intern now.

Anyways. We got to do our own project, which was our own version of Hansel & Gretel. They had changed the art internship program to be the ultimate visual development class with Harley Jessup and Steve Pilcher giving critiques every morning, and more critiques from various artists at Pixar every other afternoon. We also got to attend lectures by various Pixar artists, attend drawing workshops, ride scooters, have free cereal, watch top secret Pixar movies, and look at all the pretty drawings. Everyone was super nice and I miss the place already! :(

My version of Hansel & Gretel takes place in the 1920's in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras festival. Enjoy.

Color Script:

Hansel, Gretel, and their family are on vacation in New Orleans:

The kids get lost:

And then are lured away by the witch's candy float:

Parents notice the kids are missing, the witch has just kidnapped them:

Taking the kids to her home in the swamp...

Checks in on them, you get to see her ugly ol' mug.

The witch's house at night, a decrepit old ferry boat in a mardi gras float graveyard. It's a mouthful.

Hansel caged and Gretel in despair...

Gretel steals the key to Hansel's cage, but the witch wakes up.

The witch has poor eyesight so she sets herself on fire and accidentally takes a dive off of her house. And into an alligator's mouth.

Hansel and Gretel escape, the witch's house is on fire. The alligator is full and happy so it gives them a ride back to the city.

Hansel and Gretel are reunited with their family and say bye to the alligator. It's a white alligator. THE END.

(stuff was here)

We compiled all of our work and formatted them into portfolios on the last week. And then since we had all of hour work pinned onto large blackboards, we had to pitch it to some art directors, production designers, and other Pixar employees on the last day. Talk about nerve wracking! And then it was over. I hope to go back there soon!

The other art interns:
Lorelay Bove
Olga Stern
Bridgette Barrager
Kevin Dart
Everyone should have posted their work up by now, so go enjoy it!

My mentor Noah Klocek

I'm glad I got to take this internship, I learned a lot. School starts again in another week, I plan to make the most of it before I start working!
I said I'd upload these before I left for SF, but I ended up getting a pretty bad cold. So here are a couple of pages from the children's book I did in spring term:

gouache + paper cut outs.

Painting

It's been quite a while since my last post. I did this in painting workshop yesterday:

And I got an art internship at Pixar this summer! I will be leaving next Saturday for Emeryville, I'm so excited! Expect new work next week!

End of the term!

It's over, yaaaay!

And another comic panel:

I'll upload parts of my children's storybook later.

Finished!

MD1 Final:

Animating is hard...

Color comps

Color comps for the previous image and one I am working on right now:

This is the size I paint them in. I haven't altered the new one yet for printing purposes. If you compare the second color comp with the it's finished image, there were some changes (both aesthetic and for printing purposes).

Pg 1!

Still trying to figure out the text font, speech bubble placement, and panel outlines.

It will be about... 70 PAGES IN LENGTH!?! O___O

MD1 Final

Erm, not finished but it will (hopefully!) be finished next week.

Quality isn't really good either, I'll see if I can do something about that next time.

Aaand the monster creatures in better quality:

Adv. Vis. Dev. final

Night of the Hunter. Uh, the animated version.

more comic stuff

This is an enlarged frame from the comic that I fleshed out:

..I'm going to have to redo the previous one now.

Environment piece I did for my independent study with Will:

Mostly inpsired by vintage animation backgrounds, I was trying to combine some flat painting with line art. The printer was being super finicky with the printing on this one, so the trees are more orange then yellow, and the buildings are more gray then purple.

Oh, and the color lecture went pretty well I think, maybe I'll do it again after I reorganize my notes.

I also posted the first two themes on our sketchblog, so start sketching!

Color Theory Lecture

I'm going to be doing a color theory lecture that covers er, COLOR and how to pick colors in Photoshop the following Monday in Richard Keyes' color theory for entertainment class in rm 207, 2-7pm. Hopefully I'll be able to answer any questions on color and how to effectively apply it to environments.
Feel free to drop by whether you're in the class or not, it should be about an hour long.

Also, have some yawning turtles:

And random kids:

Remember that rat kid? The one that was always picking his nose and wiping it on people? Ever wonder what happened to him?

Assets to be used in my Motion Design 1 midterm:

Yeah it's in b/w, shocking isn't it. It'll get more colorful as the story progresses.

I'm working on a children's book on FASHION HISTORY. Yeah, seriously.

tigers

Laughing. At you. Can you blame those magnificent bastards? I think not, you bald ape!

I couldn't stop snickering when I was drawing these. Animals are more fun to draw then people.
I think I should sketch more. Next topic: Yawning turtles. Or maybe enraged witches? Feel free to suggest something. :D

More After Effects

This is a rough part 1 of my midterm. The story of a white witch who restores color to the world (which is flat on a wall) with the help of her shadow spook!

I'm going to redo this since I learned a bunch of new stuff today, it's really rough in some places... There will be four? parts in all I think. Maybe I'll have them done by the finals?

After effects assignment #2

Listen to it with the sound on! Yeah it's dorky.

And here's the full drawing of the little pinata boy:

Personal logo

My first After Effects assignment in motion! Expect more dorky cartoons soon, this program is great!

Monday, January 29, 2007

after effects

I'm taking motion design 1 this term, so this means I'll be learning how to use After Effects! This is part of the first assignment, design a 5 second logo. The alligator's mouth opens and closes, and he blinks! Mostly basic stuff, I think it would've been better if I could insert wavs. Oh well, we'll learn that eventually! I can't wait to start doing some cool animation shorts, it's like a new medium of story-telling for me.

I'll upload the mov. file to youtube once I get a good copy of it (toast titanium ate mine).

more sketches

More already?!

A first rough pass at redesigning the female character below.
The designs below are the ones I originally used for the storyboards, there wasn't anytime to improve on them during the end of the term:

And here are sketches of a new character to be added to the story. It's a spotted Daschund, I've actually seen one that was black and white in the mall. It was so cute. And it was on sale. I couldn't buy it. :(

Sketches

Design overhaul for the new secret comic! It'll have a 60's feeling to it. Eventually. And it'll be done by scholarship. (hopefully)

I don't sketch enough, so expect some more this week!

...I'm on some kind of sketching high. So, grannies. Hey isn't that the lady from the Matrix?
